Frequently asked questions

What sensors is the CIL819 1.9mm M12 lens compatible with?

The CIL819 targets 1/3.2″ sensors at 3-4MP with 2.2μm pixels. The Sony IMX179 and IMX458 are confirmed target sensors.

What is stereographic distortion and how does it differ from fisheye projection on the CIL819?

Stereographic projection holds angular relationships more evenly than a typical fisheye, so edge objects look less compressed. The CIL819 still measures -22% TV distortion at 160°, but the image usually looks more natural than an equidistant or equisolid-angle lens this wide.

What is the difference between the CIL819 M08A and M12A variants?

The M08A uses an M8 thread for very small camera modules, while the M12A uses the standard M12x0.5 thread. The optics stay the same, and you can choose either a 650nm IRC filter or a no-filter version depending on the mount size.

What cameras are mechanically compatible with the CIL819 small M12 lens?

The CIL819 needs a 6mm-9mm tall M12 holder. The Commonlands CLA018 and e-con Systems S-mount boards in that height range are confirmed compatible, while Allied Vision, FLIR, iDS, and The Imaging Source are not.

Why is the CIL819 suitable for drone applications?

The CIL819 weighs only 2.2g, and that keeps payload low on drones and small flying platforms. The F/2.0 aperture also helps when you need 160° coverage without giving up too much light.

Where can I get STP files and drawings for the CIL819 M12 lens?

STP files and mechanical drawings are available on the CIL819 product page. Contact Commonlands engineering support if you need another file format or more mechanical detail.

The CIL819 is a 1.9mm F/2.0 wide-angle M12 lens that gives you 160° FoV at a 5.6mm image circle while keeping total weight at 2.2g. That combination is rare in a standard M12 package. If your platform cares about every gram, this lens belongs on the list for drones, UAVs, and small IoT camera modules.

The projection matters as much as the field angle. The CIL819 uses stereographic mapping instead of the equidistant or equisolid-angle behavior you see in many fisheyes, so edge objects stay more natural and the periphery does not collapse as hard. Distortion is -22% TV, but the image usually looks less cramped at the edge than a conventional fisheye with the same coverage. The lens targets 1/3.2" sensors at 3-4MP with 2.2μm pixels, including the Sony IMX179 and IMX458.

Four variants cover two mount sizes. The M08A uses an M8 thread when an M12 barrel is physically too large, and it is available either with a 650nm IRC filter or with no filter. The M12A is the standard M12 version with a 650nm filter installed, while the M12B is the M12 no-filter version. The hybrid glass/plastic construction keeps mass down without giving up much image quality at this resolution class.

Mechanical fit is the real constraint. This lens needs a 6mm-9mm tall M12 holder, which is shorter than the 9mm-13mm standard used by most industrial board cameras. The Commonlands CLA018 and e-con Systems standard S-mount boards with 6-9mm holders are confirmed fits. Allied Vision Alvium, FLIR Blackfly S, iDS uEye LE, and The Imaging Source M12 boards are mechanically incompatible, and Basler Dart users should check with Basler directly.

STP files and mechanical drawings are available on the product page. Orders placed before 12 PM PST ship same day from San Diego. Volume pricing starts at 50 units.
