Choosing a Lens
How do I find an M12 lens for my project?
Start with the field of view calculator to get the focal length your sensor and working distance need, then open the closest product pages.
- Look at resolution and field of view first.
- Check each product page to confirm the CRA is within roughly ±5° of your sensor.
- If the object distance is 250mm or more, any of our lenses should be suitable.
At closer distances we suggest testing several lenses. Some will be acceptable and others will show out-of-focus corners.
How do I calculate field of view?
Use the field of view calculator. Enter your sensor format and focal length and it returns horizontal, vertical, and diagonal FoV at your working distance. If you already know the FoV you need and want the focal length instead, use the EFL calculator.
For a rectilinear lens the relationship is EFL = (working distance × sensor width) / FoV width. Catalog "max FoV" figures describe the lens image circle rather than your sensor, so do not interpolate a sensor-specific number from them.
How do I read your part numbers?
Take CIL340-F2.0-M12A650, one field at a time.
CIL340is the optical prescription.F2.0is the F-number of that specific variant.M12is the mount and thread type.Ais the mechanical variant. A, B, and C are genuinely different parts, so check the product page rather than assume they interchange.650is the filter. A number means an IR-cut filter at that wavelength, usually 650nm or 660nm.NIRin that last position means no IR cut-off filter, not NIR-corrected.
So CIL340-F2.0-M12ANIR is the same lens with no IR-cut filter.
What is the minimum object distance of your lenses? Can these be used for macro applications?
This depends on your sensor. We recommend testing the performance at your distance. Anything below 50mm could be problematic.
Mounting and Focus
How do I focus the camera?
Point the camera at a ceiling target so gravity keeps the sensor and target parallel, then thread the lens in 1/16-turn steps. On an M12 that is 31.25μm of travel per step, since the thread pitch is 0.5mm per rotation. Set exposure before you focus.
Judge sharpness at four points out at 50% of the image diagonal rather than the center alone, then lock. C-mount lenses focus by their focus ring instead, against a fixed 17.526mm flange distance.
What adhesive should I use to lock the lens in place?
Use a UV cure adhesive or a UV+heat dual cure adhesive. UV cure suits indoor and controlled environments. UV+heat dual cure is what we use for production, applied as a small fillet at the lens-holder interface, and it holds in automotive and high-vibration service. A lock ring or PTFE tape stays reversible.
We do not recommend a specific product. Cure schedule and strength depend on the adhesive and your materials, so work from the datasheet. RS Hughes, Dymax, and Loctite can help you select. Set exposure before locking focus.
My M12 lens and lens mount are loose and the lens wobbles. How do I fix this?
M12 lenses and lens mounts have varying thread tolerances. A quick fix is one to two wraps of Teflon (plumber's) tape from any hardware store.
For volume production projects our team will find a suitable lens mount and can pre-thread the lens and lens mount so the appropriate torque is achieved.
I'm using a Teledyne, FLIR, or PointGrey Blackfly C/CS-mount camera. Why won't my lens focus?
Check the lens mount guide first to confirm the mount and back focal length you need.
The IR cut-off filter installed on these cameras sits roughly 8mm to 10mm from the sensor. Any lens with an MBFL under 10mm may not be able to reach focus, including some CS-mount lenses. To bring the lens into focus you have to remove that filter and use an IR filter installed in the lens instead. See the FLIR knowledge base article and contact them before doing it, since removal voids the warranty.
Care and Troubleshooting
How do I clean optics?
Blow loose particles off first, then wipe with a proper solvent in a single pass. Dry-wiping a dusty element is how coatings get scratched. Acetone is fine on glass with metal mounts, but it attacks plastics and paint and can weaken barrel adhesives, so check what is exposed before reaching for it.
The color balance for my Raspberry Pi camera is off. How do I adjust for the IR filter?
The easiest method is to remove the IR filter from the camera or use a NoIR version. Then include the command -awb greyworld when issuing raspistill, raspiyuv, or raspivid commands.
Alternatively, refer to AWB sensitivity control on page 60 of Raspberry Pi's ISP color correction manual.
Orders and Shipping
How much does shipping cost?
Shipping cost depends on the weight, the destination, and the value of the items you purchase. It is calculated at checkout so we only charge you our direct costs.
We use small 4"x2"x2" boxes inside a soft package for 95% of our shipments, which keeps cost down while making sure items are not damaged in transit. Prices increase for faster shipment via UPS, FedEx, or DHL. If you prefer to use your own shipping account, contact us.
How fast will my products arrive?
If the items are in stock, you can expect a tracking number within 1 to 2 business days. Shipment time after that depends on the shipping method you selected.
If the items are out of stock, when will you get more inventory?
We try to restock out-of-stock items within 2 to 4 weeks. Lens lead-time can run to 10 to 12 weeks when raw glass has to be produced, so ask us before you plan a build around a date.
What is the lead-time for volume production?
For quantities above 5,000 pieces, allow 10 to 12 weeks. That window covers raw glass production where it is needed, then element manufacturing, coating, and assembly. Raw glass is what sets the floor, so quantity alone does not predict the date.
Send us the quantity and the date you need parts on the dock and we will quote against real capacity. Camera module assembly starts at a 100 piece minimum.
Do US tariffs affect my order?
If you are outside the US, our intent is to keep your price unaffected when you give us sufficient lead-time. Duty drawback and in-bond shipping handle most of it. Inside the US, the webstore carries a visible surcharge line item that sits below the real tariff rate.
Rates have moved twice in 2026, so the tariff page carries the current chart with effective and end dates.
